Abstract

The importance of the hydrodynamic profile in the design of cycloidal propellers is a key factor that needs to be considered. This study aims to address this gap by analyzing how variations in NACA profiles can affect the thrust, efficiency, and hydrodynamic characteristics of cycloidal propellers. The objective of this research is to understand in detail how changes in the NACA profile design can influence the hydrodynamic characteristics of cycloidal propellers, with a particular focus on aspects such as torque, thrust, and efficiency. This study utilizes Onshape software for 3D modeling and SimScale software for CFD simulations, which can also produce velocity contours. The study employs three NACA profiles: 0015, 0018, and one asymmetrical profile, 2415, considering the influence of varying angular velocities and three types of fluid densities: saltwater, brackish water, and freshwater. The CFD simulations conducted yielded diverse results for the three NACA profiles on the cycloidal propeller. The simulation results indicate that the best torque was achieved with the NACA 0015 profile, the best thrust with the NACA 2415 profile, and the highest efficiency with the NACA 0018 profile. Thus, this study provides a deep understanding of the various types of NACA profiles for cycloidal propellers with different types of fluids and contributes to the further development of research on cycloidal propeller technology.
