Abstract
Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is a technology that utilizes the temperature contrast between warm surface seawater and cold deep seawater for electricity generation. Despite being a prominent global topic due to its potential as an alternative to traditional energy sources like oil and coal, OTEC has yet to be implemented in Indonesia, primarily due to various considerations. Nonetheless, Indonesia, especially the West Papua region, holds significant potential for OTEC adoption. This study aims to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of OTEC technology in West Papua's waters. Employing the Engineering Equation Solver (EES) software, the analysis of the OTEC thermodynamic system involved R-22 and R-1234yf working fluids with varying temperatures. The analysis encompassed the pump, evaporator, turbine, and condenser components, extracting data on enthalpy, energy, and efficiency. Results revealed disparities in enthalpy and energy values between R-22 and R-1234yf fluids, with R-22 exhibiting lower Enthalpy Outlet Condenser and Enthalpy Outlet Pump values but higher Enthalpy Outlet Turbine and Enthalpy Outlet Evaporator values, making it optimal for the system. Notably, the highest pump energy in the OTEC system was observed with R-1234yf, whereas R-22 exhibited superior evaporator, turbine, and condenser energies. Moreover, R-22 demonstrated the highest thermal efficiency in the OTEC system at 14.34%, generating approximately 160 kW of power, signifying significant potential in West Papua's waters. However, international regulations restrict R-22 usage due to its adverse environmental impact, necessitating the long-term adoption of R-1234yf to foster sustainable OTEC development in Indonesia, given its lower GWP and absence of ozone layer depletion. Consequently, this research serves as a foundational reference for OTEC technology advancement in Indonesia and aids in further research endeavors.
