Abstract

Male infertility occurs due to decreased sperm quality, including low sperm count, reduced sperm motility, and abnormal sperm shape. Smoking produces ROS, which are thought to affect spermatogenesis. Several studies have shown that exposure to chemicals in cigarette smoke can affect sperm quality. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between smoking patterns and sperm shape and movement in infertile men at Harapan Kita Hospital in 2022. This study was an observational analytical study using a cross-sectional approach. Specimens for this study were obtained from the medical records of 43 infertile men. The sampling method used was sequential sampling, and the data collected were analyzed through the Chi-square statistical test. The results showed that the average age group of infertile men was 31-40 years old, with a length of marriage of 1-5 years at 72%. Respondents who smoked the most were in the moderate category at 65% and the length of smoking was 5-10 years. A p value of less than 0.05 from the chi-square test showed a significant relationship between smoking habits and sperm morphology and motility of infertile men. The research findings show a clear relationship between smoking habits and sperm morphology and motility of infertile men at RSAB Harapan Kita in 2022.
