Abstract
Hypertension is a common global disease in the elderly. In Indonesia, more than 50% of the elderly have hypertension, causing 427,218 deaths each year. It needs the involvement of all parties, including health workers and the community, to optimize the management of hypertension, both with pharmacological and non-pharmacological management. Hypertension management must be carried out for life, it is important to make patients aware of non-pharmacological therapies to reduce boredom and prevent non-compliance. Progressive Muscle Relaxation is a non-pharmacological therapy that has been proven effective in reducing blood pressure with the concept of combining deep breathing techniques and a series of muscle contractions and relaxations. It is important to empower such interventions for elderly people with hypertension, who often complain of high blood pressure and also muscles that feel painful or stiff due to hypertension or age. With a case study research design that applies Evidence-Based Nursing Practice, this study aims to analyze family nursing care with PMR interventions in elderly people with hypertension. The results of the analysis showed that both patients experienced a significant decrease in blood pressure (p-value <0.05) through the Wilcoxon test. Both patients experienced a 1-level decrease in hypertension classification, but the difference in blood pressure reduction in the managed patient was found to be greater. This is related to the factors of different levels of adherence to hypertension management, as well as different genders.
