Abstract
The boom as one of the excavator components must have a strong and reliable construction when operating the excavator. Design optimization is carried out to obtain the best excavator boom design in terms of minimum weight without sacrificing safety factors and fatigue life cycles. The optimization process was assisted by Ansys Workbench R1 software in carrying out the analysis. The simulation was carried out on the three materials that have been determined, namely ASTM A572 (existing), S700MC, and HARDOX 400. Based on the simulation results, it can be seen that the safety factor and fatigue life cycle increase along with the material changes made. The reduction in weight also occurred significantly along with changes in boom dimensions. The results of optimization boom design 2 with HARDOX 400 material are the most optimal boom design because it has the minimum weight when compared to other boom designs and the structural strength of the boom is also still within safe limits.
