Abstract

Within the diverse tapestry of ASEAN, exploring the relationship between political institutions and economic performance proves fascinating. This study investigates the impact of institutional quality, proxied by the Democracy Index, Corruption Perception Index, and Human Development Index, on per capita income in six member states: Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Utilizing panel data regression for 2010-2022, there’s clear positive correlation between stronger democratic institutions, lower corruption levels, and higher human capital investment with increased per capita income across all six nations. Notably, the combined effect of these institutional strengths demonstrates an even more potent influence on economic growth. Our findings paint a compelling picture: robust political systems, effective anti-corruption measures, and strong human development are not just individual pillars, but intertwined forces propelling ASEAN towards its full economic potential.
