Abstract

Syzygium myrtifolium Walp also known as the red shoot plant, is a decorative plant frequently seen in urban areas such as streets and parks. This plant serves as a herbal beverage due to its antioxidant properties, which are attributed to the presence of flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and triterpenoids. Antioxidants play a crucial role in health by scavenging detrimental free radicals in the body, so enhancing well-being and decreasing the likelihood of illness. The purpose of this research was to assess the antioxidant activity of red shoots leaf tea (Syzygium myrtifolium Walp.) by using orange and yellow leaves and experimenting with different brewing temperatures of 80°C, 90°C, and 100°C. Vitamin C served as the positive control. The used methodology for antioxidant testing included the utilization of DPPH. The specimen was subjected to a reaction with DPPH in order to ascertain its absorbance at a specific wavelength of 514 nm. Subsequently, the absorbance was determined as the percentage of inhibition and IC50. The research demonstrates that yellow leaf samples with a temperature of 80 °C exhibit the maximum antioxidant activity, with a value of 2.33 ± 0.15 ppm. In comparison, the IC50 findings for vitamin C are 1.6 ± 0.11 ppm. The relationship between leaf color and brewing temperature has a significant impact on antioxidant activity.
