Abstract
Indonesia is facing an increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus each year. Diabetes mellitus, as a metabolic disorder has the potential to increase the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), potentially leading to complications such as reproductive system diseases, including infertility. Herbal treatment has emerged as a preventive measure, and the utilization of herbal remedies is currently gaining substantial attention. Breadfruit leaves (Artocarpus altilis F.) represent a botanical option due to their secondary metabolite content, serving as a source of antioxidants because of the content in it. This study aims is to investigate the impact of breadfruit leaf extract on the increase in sperm total count in diabetic rats. The experimental menthod was the method used in this study with a post-test-only control group design and using subjects induced with streptozotocin (STZ). There were 3 treatment groups receiving breadfruit leaf extract doses of 200 mg/kgBW, 400 mg/kgBW, and 800 mg/kgBW tested along with a positive control group (standard diet, water intake, and STZ induction without breadfruit leaf extract) and negative control group (standard diet, water intake, and no STZ induction). The results of this study were processed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann�Whitney Pos-hoc test with significant result (P Value <0.05) in negative control group and the treatment group against the positive control group. A dose of 200 mg/kgBW dose of breadfruit leaf extract exhibited effects nearly equivalent to the negative control group. In conclusion, the administration of breadfruit leaf extract can influence sperm total count in diabetic rats.
