Abstract

Hyperglycemia causes cells in the body to experiencing oxidative stress. One of the cells that can be damaged is liver cells. Palm sugar is one of the natural ingredients that contains calcium and antioxidant compounds useful to reduce hyperglycemia and oxidative stress triggering agents. This research aimed to determine the toxicity effect of palm sugar solution (Arenga pinnata) on liver histology display of streptozotocin-induced rats of Sprague-dawley strain. This research applied pure experimental design. 60 rats were randomly put into 6 groups, each group totalling to 10 rats, consisting of 5 male rats and 5 female rats. Divided into six groups, consisting of positive control (streptozotocin), and three treatment groups given streptozotocin and palm sugar solutions of different doses (486, 675, and 945 mg / day). It were carried out for 28 days. Control satellite and high-dose satellite groups were discontinued treatment after 28 days for 14 days. Surgery was performed to obtain preparations and Hematoxylin-eosin staining. The blood glucose levels were measured on days 8, 13, 41, and 55. The One Way Anova test showed significant differences between each group (p = 0.001). The Post Hoc test showed that the treatment group had significant results compare to positive control, meaning that there was an effect of palm sugar solution in repairing or adding liver histology damage, and the satellite groups showed reversible effects. The average dose of 945 mg / day was a toxic dose that adds liver histological damage and was less effective for reducing blood sugar levels.
