Abstract
One of the most common causes of death in children under five is diarrhea. Diarrhea does not always need to be treated with antibiotics. Antibiotic resistance that is harmful to health can occur due to antibiotics that are given irrationally. Antibiotic resistance control must be carried out by various parties, one of which is the hospital. This study aims to evaluate the rationality of antibiotic use in toddler patients with acute diarrhea at Cibinong Hospital in 2022. This type of descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional design and using a total sampling technique. The results showed that the use of 17 antibiotics in toddler patients who experienced acute diarrhea at Cibinong Hospital in 2022 was 23.6% rational and 76.4% irrational. Cefixime is the most commonly used antibiotic. Metronidazole was only given to two patients. The grouping of the rationality of antibiotics given based on Gyssens criteria was as many as 5 antibiotics (29.4%) were inappropriate indications (category V), 1 antibiotic (5.9%) was irrational because there were other antibiotics that were more effective (category IVa), 7 antibiotics (41.2%) were inappropriate doses (category IIa), and 4 antibiotics (23.5%) were used rationally (category 0). More than 50% of antibiotic use in RSUD Cibinong is irrational, so it is necessary to have guidelines and supervision of antibiotic use in RSUD Cibinong so that it can play a role in controlling antibiotic resistance in Indonesia.
