Abstract

High learning demands for medical students result in their habit of rarely exercising and not paying attention to nutritional intake, such as high carbohydrate and salt, which increases the extracellular to intracellular body water ratio (ECW/ICW ratio). This study aims to determine the association between the ECW/ICW ratio and students’ cognitive abilities and working memory. This study used a cross-sectional design on 69 students from the Faculty of Medicine at UPN "Veteran" Jakarta who met the criteria and were selected using a simple random sampling technique. ECW/ICW ratio measurement used the Tanita Body Composition Analyzer, while cognitive flexibility and working memory used the Cognitive Failure Questionnaire (CFQ). The analysis showed no differences in sex ratio, age, and blood pressure in the cognitive function failure groups (p > 0.05). The study results showed CES/CIS ratio of 30 (43.5%) subjects normal and 39 (56.5%) subjects high. The results of the cognitive function examination showed 34 (49.3%) subjects with low level of cognitive function failure, 28 (40.6%) subjects with moderate level of cognitive function failure, and 7 (10.1%) subjects with high cognitive function failure. The Chi-square shows no relationship between ECW/ICW and Cognitive Flexibility and Working Memory (p = 0.533). It can be concluded that there is no relationship between the ratio of extracellular fluid to intracellular fluid and basic cognitive and working memory.
