Abstract
Euthanasia is the act of ending the life of a person suffering from a terminal or incurable disease in a dignified and painless manner. This action is still controversial in many countries, including Indonesia, because it is contrary to religious, moral, and legal values. Doctors who carry out euthanasia run the risk of receiving legal sanctions, both criminal and civil, because they are considered to have committed murder or abuse. However, on the other hand, doctors also have an obligation to respect the patient's right to self-determination and reduce suffering. Therefore, a legal protection policy is needed for doctors carrying out euthanasia actions in palliative care. Palliative services are health services that aim to improve the quality of life of patients and their families who face problems related to life-threatening illnesses. This study aims to analyse the implementation of euthanasia in palliative care and prospective legal protection arrangements for doctors who perform euthanasia in palliative care. This study uses a normative juridical method with a statutory and comparative approach. The results of the study show that the policy of legal protection for doctors who perform euthanasia in palliative care can be carried out in several ways. These include: changing the health law and medical code of ethics to fit the principle of patient and doctor autonomy; making special rules about the terms, procedures, and supervision of euthanasia; and educating the public about the rights and responsibilities of patients and doctors.
