Abstract
Weverse is a brand-new social network created to fulfill the needs of K-Pop fans. K-Pop fans have long engaged in fandom-related activities on social media, that is also known as "fangirling". However, every social media platforms offers different features which differentiate the needs that each one satisfies. The fulfillment of these needs increases the intensity of social media usage that it can reach dependency or even addictive level of usage. Weverse was purposefully created as a fan-community social media which able to develop addiction. The purpose of this study is to determine the real-world impact on the use of Weverse social media as a cyberspace in carrying out fan activities, especially in terms of communication, by Indonesian fans of Korean boyband Treasure or so called Treasure Maker. This study was carried out utilizing a qualitative research methodology and Christine Hine's virtual ethnographic technique. Fans of the boyband Treasure, often known as Treasure Maker, are the subjects of this study. Participant observation and indepth interviews with five informants who matched the predetermined criteria were used to gather the data. The results of the study show that dependence on Weverse social media stems from fulfilling relatedness needs, where Weverse social media fulfills Treasure Maker's desire to interact with members of the Treasure boy band. The pleasure provided by social media raises computer anxiety in the form of Fear of Missing Out or FoMO and the addictive nature of members of the Treasure Maker community.
