Abstract

Pain is a protective mechanism that tissue damage is being or will occur. Many people who use herbs to deal with pain such as clove oil assumed that herbal medicines have fewer side effects. Public assumption regarding analgesic effect in clove oil is not truly supported by scientific research. This study was to determine clove oil (S. aromaticum) effectiveness in analgesic in mice induced by acetic acid. In this study, 0.7% acetic acid intrapetitoneal induction method was used in 25 male mice which were divided into 5 groups. Groups I, II and III with doses of 350, 600 and 850 mg/Kg, positive control group was given meloxicam 0.0039 mg/Kg and negative control were given Tween80. Experiment results and One Way Anova test obtained p>0.05 showed no significant difference between clove oil doses I and II with meloxicam in the analgesic effect. p<0.05 showed significant difference between clove oil dose III and meloxicam. Analgesic effectiveness of clove oil dose III showed a higher value of 118% compared to clove oil doses I, II and meloxicam which had equivalent values of 100%, 100% and 102% respectively. Analgesic effect occcurs due to eugenol substances contained in clove oil which can inhibit prostaglandin synthesis
