Abstract
The prolonged war and conflicts in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region, has made many citizens within the region moving and seeking asylum to areas outside their country that are safer and more conducive. This issue has created the massive migration of “refugees” to several countries, including the European Union (EU). However, due to the massive migration wave coming to the area, the EU could not contain it and consequently, they formulate the regulations to manage and control the refugee crisis in EU. While the majority of EU countries are closing themselves, limiting the arrival of the immigrant group, or even refused it, Germany, as a part of the EU, opens their “door” widely for immigrants who were affected by conflicts and war in the Middle East and North Africa. But it triggered criticism from a community group called PEGIDA (Patriotische Europaer Gegen die Ismaisierung Des Abndlande), which has a contribution in spreading anti-Islamic and anti-immigrant sentiment in Germany. This campaign was also supported by the German’s right-wing nationalist party, AfD (Alternative für Deutschland), where the party itself is an opposition of government party that openly rejects the existence of Muslim immigrants throughout Germany. The affiliation of these two groups has created a propaganda, which led the public towards becoming an anti-immigrant and anti-Islamic society. This movement brought people into being xenophobic towards some German communities. This research will be using the qualitative method with the cosmopolitan democracy as an analytical framework. The approachment method that will be used in this research is a case study approachment with descriptive research type.
