Abstract
This study examines the use of the Close Friend feature on a second Instagram account as a form of self-disclosure on social media. The Close Friend feature has become increasingly important as it provides users with a space to limit their audience, maintain privacy, and share more personal information in an increasingly open social media environment. This study aims to identify the motives for using the Close Friend feature, examine the forms of self-disclosure practiced by users, and analyze the self-disclosure process based on the Johari Window model. This research employed a qualitative method using a constructivism paradigm. The constructivism paradigm was applied to understand how each informant constructs meaning and interprets their experiences in using the Close Friend feature as a medium for self-disclosure on social media. Data were collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews with five informants who actively use the Close Friend feature on their second Instagram accounts. This study adopted the Johari Window model developed by Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham as the primary analytical framework. The Johari Window model explains that self-disclosure consists of four areas: the Open Area, which contains information known to both oneself and others; the Hidden Area, which includes information known only to oneself and intentionally concealed from others; the Blind Area, which refers to information known by others but not recognized by oneself; and the Unknown Area, which consists of information unknown to both oneself and others. The findings indicate that the use of the Close Friend feature is motivated by the need to maintain privacy, filter audiences based on interpersonal closeness, create a safe and comfortable space for self-expression, and share more personal information than on primary or second accounts. Based on the Johari Window analysis, the informants' self-disclosure was predominantly characterized by the expansion of the Open Area, as reflected in their willingness to share daily activities, feelings, opinions, and personal experiences with trusted individuals. Meanwhile, the Hidden Area was maintained by withholding highly private information, such as family issues, personal conflicts, financial conditions, and secrets that could affect their self-image. This study concludes that the Close Friend feature serves as a medium that facilitates selective self-disclosure, enabling users to communicate more comfortably while maintaining personal privacy on social media.
