Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Greenpeace as a transnational non-governmental organization (NGO) in responding to the greenwashing practices conducted by H&M in Bangladesh. The research is motivated by the increasing sustainability claims promoted by H&M despite growing criticism regarding the environmental and social impacts generated by the fast fashion industry in Global South countries, particularly Bangladesh as one of H&M’s major production hubs. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing interviews and literature review as data collection techniques. The analysis is conducted using Climate Justice Theory and Transnational Advocacy Networks (TANs). The findings reveal that H&M’s greenwashing practices contribute to climate injustice by creating an imbalance between those who benefit economically and those who bear the environmental burden. In this context, Greenpeace acts as a transnational advocacy actor through campaigns, investigative reports, information dissemination, and reputational pressure to promote greater transparency and accountability from H&M. This study concludes that Greenpeace plays a significant role in monitoring greenwashing practices and advocating for a more equitable environmental governance system, although such efforts continue to face challenges due to the fast fashion business model that relies on mass production and overconsumption.
