Abstract
This study examines how Jane Austen's gender equality thinking in Persuasion (1818) is reflected in the women's empowerment activism of World Pulse, a US-based digital NGO. It is grounded in the structural continuity of gender inequality from the 19th-century Regency era to contemporary contexts in the Global South. Drawing on Jean-François Lyotard's postmodernism (métarécits, petits récits, language games), Judith Butler's performativity, and Di Bella et al.'s (2023) multidimensional framework, the study analyzes three domains: economic sovereignty, epistemic authority, and freedom of choice, supported by Kabeer (2009) and Finley (1987). Using a qualitative approach with Krippendorff's content analysis, the research compares the novel, its 2022 film adaptation, and World Pulse narratives. Findings demonstrate that members' digital narratives function as contemporary small narratives (petits récits) that collectively deconstruct the global patriarchal metanarrative, transcending the historical emancipatory limitations in Austen's work. World Pulse also acts as a global civil society actor addressing international gender policy gaps through counter-citationality and the transnational boomerang effect (Keck & Sikkink, 1998). Ultimately, this research affirms that deconstructing the patriarchal metanarrative transcends historical eras, media, and geographical boundaries.
