Abstract
The Middle East is a region steeped in dynamics dominated by long-term conflict, regime brutality, and migration flows. Turkey has emerged as a regional country accepting significant numbers of refugees, primarily from Syria and Iran. Following the Arab Spring, which triggered instability in the Middle East, the dynamics of Turkey's border regions have become unstable due to the emergence of threats from the militant organizations PKK, YPG, and PYD, accompanied by an increasingly massive refugee flow. This study employed qualitative methods, analyzing the related phenomena from 2016-2024. Data collection was conducted through interviews and Turkish government publications, media outlets, and relevant journal articles. This study shows that the construction of the border wall is a strategic security policy instrument to protect Turkey's sovereignty as a nation. Based on a constructivist perspective, this study finds that border tightening policy is not solely driven by material needs, but rather the result of a securitization process to build political legitimacy at the domestic level. Overall, the strategy of building a border wall on the Syrian and Iranian borders has the same goal which is to suppress the flow of migrants, maintain Turkey’s national stability, and cut off the movement of regional terrorist networks.
