Abstract

Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) persistently rank among the most prevalent medical challenges affecting young children throughout Indonesia. The biological systems governing respiration and immunological defense remain unrefined within this pediatric demographic, rendering toddlers exceptionally susceptible to pathogen invasion. Indoor tobacco smoke pollution within residential areas is identified as a primary exogenous trigger that significantly amplifies the likelihood of disease development in this vulnerable population. This investigation was conducted to evaluate the precise association between domestic smoking practices and the prevalence of respiratory morbidity among young children residing in Katumbiri Village. A quantitative analytical strategy employing a correlational cross-sectional framework was adopted to successfully achieve the primary objectives of the research. Fieldwork data collection took place in Katumbiri Village between February and June 2026, encompassing a total of 146 participants chosen through proportional modern sampling techniques. The data acquisition instruments systematically captured demographic traits, household smoking habits, and clinical health timelines. Empirical results revealed that a substantial majority, specifically 118 households (80.8%), permitted smoking indoors, whereas 98 toddler subjects (67.1%) had experienced episodes of respiratory illness. Statistical computations utilizing the Chi-Square test verified a highly substantial correlation between familial smoking behavior and infection frequencies, yielding a significance level of p<0.001. Furthermore, an Odds Ratio (OR) value of 6.479, accompanied by a 95% Confidence Interval (CI) spanning from 2.642 to 15.888, demonstrates that children residing with active smokers face vastly magnified morbidity hazards relative to peers in pristine, smoke-free environments. Ultimately, the findings establish a definitive and statistically significant link between indoor smoking habits and respiratory illness among young children in Katumbiri Village. Consequently, expanding community advocacy and campaign efforts for smoke-free residential spaces is urgently necessary to safeguard pediatric respiratory health.
