Abstract
This study aims to analyze the representation of teachers in the film Pengepungan di Bukit Duri using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach at the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through documentary analysis of scenes, dialogues, and visual and audio elements in the film. The data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, supported by prolonged observation to ensure data validity. The findings show that the film represents the teacher as a vulnerable subject, a subject situated within power relations, and a subject in the personal and social sphere. At the level of myth, the study finds that the representation of teachers in the film is associated with various cultural views embedded in Indonesian society, including expectations of teachers’ moral image, their position as role models, and the expectation that they continue to serve despite facing personal and institutional pressures. Thus, the weakening of teacher authority in the film is not merely portrayed as a personal deficiency, but is also related to the social and institutional expectations attached to the teaching profession.
