Abstract
This study examines the phenomenon of self-disclosure by college students to the artificial intelligence system Gemini AI in the context of academic problems. Using Edmund Husserl’s descriptive phenomenological approach, this study seeks to understand the subjective experiences of students when interacting with Gemini AI as a medium for confiding in it about academic problems. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five active undergraduate students who had been using Gemini AI for more than three months and had previously shared their academic problems with Gemini AI. The research findings identified five main themes: (1) the background behind students’ self-disclosure to Gemini, driven by a reluctance to burden those closest to them, Gemini’s non-judgmental nature, and its 24-hour availability; (2) active negotiation in interacting with Gemini through adjustments to prompts and language style; (3) Gemini’s emotional limitations compared to humans, which made informants feel more comfortable expressing their deepest feelings to humans; (4) Gemini’s role as an academic partner and productivity tool, encompassing assignment discussions, brainstorming, and career planning; and (5) feeling assisted while simultaneously recognizing AI’s limitations, allowing them to position Gemini solely as a complement. This study concludes that students use Gemini reflectively and critically, treating it as a complement not a replacement for emotional interactions with humans. These findings underscore the importance of digital literacy and ethical awareness in the use of AI in academic settings.
