Abstract

This research is motivated by the phenomenon of dysfunctional family communication and its impact on girls' identity formation, particularly the closed, that creates emotional distance and hinders children from understanding their self-worth. This study analyses girls' subjective experiences of dysfunctional family communication and its role in identity formation, using the Family Communication Patterns Theory (Fitzpatrick & Koerner) and a qualitative, Heideggerian phenomenological method on four young-adult female informants. The results show a disparity in understanding between children and parents that leads to dysfunctional communication, marked by a lack of openness and insufficient opportunity for children to be heard, triggering tension between family obedience and the need for self-expression, and identity confusion. Self-identity formation in girls from dysfunctional families is dynamic and non-linear, moving toward authenticity.
