Abstract

The growth of the mobile gaming industry, such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB), consistently involves long-duration, asymmetric, and repetitive bilateral hand usage patterns. This touch-screen interaction pattern potentially triggers bilateral neuromuscular function imbalances in the upper extremities of players. Objective: This study aims to analyze the comparison of central component neuromuscular function through Visual Reaction Time (VRT) and peripheral component function through Handgrip Strength (HGS) between the dominant and non-dominant hands in right-handed and left-handed student Mobile Legends gamers. Methods: This study utilized a comparative analytic crosssectional design. A total of 20 male student respondents (10 right-dominant and 10 left-dominant) aged 18–24 years were selected using a purposive sampling technique. VRT was measured using the Reaction Test Pro 4.0 digital application, while HGS was measured using a Digital Handgrip Dynamometer. Internal and inter-group comparative data analyses were tested using parametric statistical methods, specifically the Paired Samples T-Test and Independent Samples T-Test via SPSS software version 30.0. Results: In the right-dominant group, there was a significant difference in HGS (p = 0.025), with the right hand mean outperforming the left hand (38.310 kgf vs 36.040 kgf), but no significant difference was found in the VRT parameter (p = 0.740). Conversely, in the left-dominant group, there was no significant difference in HGS between both hands (p = 0.134), but a significant difference in VRT was observed (p = 0.039), with the left hand performance (236.1 ms) being faster than the right hand (247 ms). The inter-group comparative test showed no significant differences in both the HGS difference (Delta) value (p = 0.757) and the VRT Delta value (p = 0.145). Conclusion: Bilateral neuromuscular asymmetry showed distinct adaptations by hand dominance. Right-handed individuals maintained HGS asymmetry despite comparable VRT, whereas lefthanded individuals showed comparable HGS but faster VRT in the dominant hand. Despite these differences, the overall performance gap (Delta) was comparable between groups in young adulthood.
