Abstract

This study aims to explore and understand the ethical meaning behind accounting practices in the Malam Mangkat tradition of Betawi bride's families. The study is motivated by the existence of donation receipt and recording practices that reflect accounting activities within the community but are interpreted more as cultural practices than as formal accounting. This study employed a qualitative method using Edmund Husserl's transcendental phenomenological approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving Betawi bride's families, a Betawi cultural figure, and donation contributors. The data were analyzed using the stages of noema, epoche (bracketing), noesis, intentional analysis, and eidetic reduction. The findings reveal that accounting practices in the Malam Mangkat tradition are reflected in the identification, receipt, recording, storage, and use of donation information as a basis for future decision-making. These practices represent moral responsibility, appreciation for others' kindness, reminders of social obligations to reciprocate assistance, and efforts to preserve reciprocal relationships and mutual cooperation within the Betawi community. This study concludes that accounting practices in the Malam Mangkat tradition represent a form of cultural accounting that embodies ethical, social, and cultural values in Betawi society.
