Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels and is often accompanied by hypertension. Medication adherence is a crucial factor in disease control and is influenced by patients’ knowledge and attitudes. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between knowledge and attitudes and medication adherence among patients with diabetes mellitus and comorbid hypertension at Kebayoran Lama Primary Health Center. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design using a cross-sectional method. The study sample consisted of 62 respondents selected based on inclusion criteria. Research instruments included validated and reliable knowledge and attitude questionnaires, as well as the eight-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) to measure medication adherence. The results of the Spearman correlation test showed that respondents had good knowledge levels (44%) and good attitudes (93%); however, medication adherence levels were low (60%). The analysis indicated no significant relationship between knowledge and medication adherence (r = 0.216; p = 0.091) or between attitudes and medication adherence (r = 0.067; p = 0.602). Based on these findings, it can be concluded that knowledge and attitudes are not significantly associated with medication adherence among patients with diabetes mellitus and hypertension. The lack of a significant association is presumed to be influenced by factors beyond knowledge and attitudes, as well as potential response bias, particularly social desirability bias.
