Abstract
One of the innovations in the development of natural materials in the pharmaceutical world is the use of herbal plant polymers from C.barbata and P.oblongifolia leaves as bio gelling agent excipients. C.barbata and P.oblongifolia leaves contain pectin polymers that have the ability to form gels at room temperature. This study aims to analyze the physical stability and irritation properties of bio gelling agents from C.barbata and P.oblongifolia leaves. Observations of physical stability tests were carried out on days 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28 at a temperature of 40oC ± 2oC and a relative humidity of 75% ± 5% with observation parameters including organoleptic tests, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, and syneresis. Meanwhile, the irritation test was conducted using the Hen’s Egg Test Chorioallantoic Membrane (HET-CAM). The concentration of the bio gelling agent used to form the gel in this study was 2% of C.barbata and P.oblongifolia isolates. The results of the study showed that the gel preparation formed had stable physical characteristics during the 28-day storage period against all test parameters. The gel formed from the P.oblongifolia isolate was better than the C.barbata isolate as indicated by a significant difference in the results of the physical stability test between the bio gelling agent from C.barbata and P.oblongifolia leaves (p <0.05). Meanwhile, the results of the HET-CAM method irritation test showed that the bio gelling agent from C.barbata and P.oblongifolia leaves did not cause irritation reactions. Therefore, it can be concluded that C.barbata and P.oblongifolia leaves produce a stable and safe gel for use.
