Abstract

Obesity is a risk factor frequently associated with decreased sperm quality in infertile men. Excessive fat accumulation can trigger hormonal imbalances, increased scrotal temperature, and oxidative stress, which can disrupt spermatogenesis. This study aims to determine the relationship between obesity and sperm concentration based on motility, morphology, and concentration parameters in infertile men undergoing semen analysis at Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital in the period 2024–2025. The study used a cross-sectional design with secondary data from medical records of 70 patients who met the inclusion criteria. The independent variable was obesity (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2), while the dependent variables included total motility, sperm morphology, and sperm concentration. Statistical tests used Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests. The results showed no significant relationship between obesity and sperm motility (p=0.738) and sperm concentration (p=1.000). However, there was a significant relationship between obesity and sperm morphology (p=0.037). In conclusion, obesity affects sperm morphology, but does not show a significant relationship with sperm motility or concentration in infertile men at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto. sity.
