Abstract
Background: Patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with Naso-Gastric Tube (NGT) placement frequently experience gastrointestinal problems. These conditions can delay recovery, increase the risk of complications, and reduce the effectiveness of enteral nutrition therapy. Pharmacological interventions do not always provide optimal responses; therefore, non-pharmacological approaches such as warm compress therapy are needed to improve gastrointestinal motility and reduce discomfort. Objective: To apply Evidence-Based Nursing (EBN) through the administration of warm compress therapy to reduce gastrointestinal dysfunction. Methods: This study is an observational descriptive case study conducted at Tarakan General Hospital. The subjects were two ICU patients with gastrointestinal dysfunction. Inclusion criteria included patients with a nasogastric tube, experiencing gastrointestinal problems, and willing to participate as respondents. Intervention data were collected through the administration of warm compresses for 10 minutes once daily for 3 consecutive days according to the standard operating procedure. Results: Both patients showed improvements in gastrointestinal function, including reduced gastric residual volume, decreased abdominal distension, improved bowel sounds, reduced nausea and vomiting, and increased bowel movements after 3 days of intervention. Conclusion: Warm compress therapy can be performed routinely as a complementary intervention to support the recovery of ICU patients.
