Abstract
The increasing public attention toward the Palestinian issue and the growing calls to boycott products perceived as supporting Israel form the background of this study. Social media has become a highly strategic platform for disseminating advocacy messages and mobilizing collective action. The global Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement aims to encourage the public to refrain from using products whose parent companies have financial or operational ties to Israel, and the Instagram account @gerakanbds serves as one of the active digital communication channels promoting this campaign in Indonesia. This study aims to identify and analyze the message appeals used by the account in framing boycott campaigns against products that support Israel. The research employs a quantitative content analysis method with a total of 156 units of analysis, consisting of 78 image-based content and 78 text-based content, collected from posts published by the @gerakanbds account between 29 May 2021 and 13 September 2025. Preliminary findings show that the campaign content on this account is dominated by rational appeals, characterized by the presentation of facts, visual data, information about corporate ties to Israel, and logical arguments intended to provide strong cognitive foundations for audiences to participate in boycott actions. In addition, the account also makes use of emotional appeals that highlight the suffering of the Palestinian people, perceptions of injustice, and humanitarian narratives that evoke emotional responses such as empathy and anger. Thus, the persuasive communication strategy employed by @gerakanbds integrates rational and emotional message appeals in a complementary manner to enhance the effectiveness of boycott messages and broaden public support for the BDS movement in the digital sphere.
