Abstract

This study aims to examine the representation of violence perpetrated by women against men in the series Baby Reindeer, with a focus on the relational dynamics between the characters Martha and Donny. Departing from the dominant gender-based violence narrative that typically positions women as victims and men as perpetrators, this research explores psychological, verbal, and physical violence inflicted by a female character upon a male character. Employing a qualitative approach and Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis, the study maps how signs, symbols, and myths within the visual narrative construct meaning about power and gender relations. The analysis reveals that the character Martha consistently engages in stalking, emotional manipulation, and invasion of Donny’s private space, portraying him as a male character suffering profound psychological distress. On the denotative level, these acts are represented as obsessive attachment, while on the connotative level, the series deconstructs social myths surrounding masculinity and dominance. The violence depicted is not only personal but also reflects power relations that transcend gender. These findings contribute to expanding the understanding of gender complexity in representations of violence and open discussions on the shifting paradigms of perpetrator–victim relations in popular culture. This study serves as a preliminary foundation for further research on non-conventional gender-based violence in audiovisual media.
