Abstract
Hypertension is one of the degenerative diseases commonly found in the elderly population and can lead to serious complications if not managed properly. This condition is also often accompanied by sleep quality disturbances due to increased sympathetic nerve activity and physiological tension that is natural in the elderly. Hypertension and sleep quality disorders can be treated with a non-pharmacological approach, one of which is foot and back massage. The purpose of this study was to analyze family nursing care for elderly people with hypertension through the application of foot and back massage as an effort to overcome high blood pressure and sleep disorders. The design used was a case study with a pre-post test approach without a control group. This study was conducted on two elderly hypertensive patients, and the intervention was carried out for 3 weeks with a total of 6 meetings. The measuring instruments used were a sphygmomanometer and a PSQI questionnaire. The results showed a decrease in the average systolic and diastolic blood pressure in both clients, where Mrs. E experienced an average decrease in systolic blood pressure of 8.83 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure of 7.84 mmHg, and Mrs. K experienced an average decrease in systolic blood pressure of 4.5 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure of 3.34 mmHg. Additionally, an improvement in sleep quality was observed in both clients, with Mrs. E's score improving from 6 to 4 and Mrs. K's score improving from 10 to 5, indicating a shift from poor to good sleep quality. Based on this study, foot and back massage has been proven effective as a non-pharmacological intervention in family nursing care to help overcome high blood pressure and sleep disorders in elderly people with hypertension.
