Abstract
Social media functions not only as a platform for information sharing but also as a space for emotional expression, including verbal aggression, as seen in the existence of the Komunitas Marah-Marah, which is utilized by its members to vent negative emotions. This study aims to explore the meaning of verbal aggression as a form of social interaction within the Komunitas Marah-Marah on social media X. This research employs Alfred Schutz’s phenomenological approach through in-depth interviews with six informants who actively participate in the community. The findings indicate that verbal aggression within the Komunitas Marah-Marah cannot be understood merely as spontaneous or uncontrolled aggressive behavior, but rather as a social action that holds subjective meaning for individuals. Members’ motives for engaging in verbal aggression are influenced by because-of motives, including past experiences such as work-related stress, social conflicts, limited spaces for expression, and momentary emotional conditions. Meanwhile, in-order-to motives relate to the intention to gain emotional relief, emotional validation, and a sense of safety. The pattern of verbal aggression observed is predominantly active and indirect, with the dominant behavioral aspects being teasing and the use of profanity. Therefore, verbal aggression does not always carry a destructive meaning but can function as an emotional regulation strategy within digital interactions.
