Abstract
The use of e-cigarettes among adolescents has become a serious public health challenge as it is often perceived as a modern lifestyle trend, despite posing long-term risks to lung health and nicotine addiction. Massive exposure to social media content and pressure from the social environment can cloud adolescents' perspectives, leading them to perceive e-cigarettes as harmless. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between e-cigarette content exposure on social media and peer pressure with the perception of e-cigarette hazards among adolescents at SMAN 13 Depok. The method used was quantitative research with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 290 respondents selected using a stratified random sampling technique. Data collection utilized the Adolescent E-Cigarette Consequences Questionnaire (AECQ), AECQ Health subscale Risk and the Peer Pressure Scale Questionnaire. The results showed a relationship between content exposure and hazard perception (p = 0.000; r = -0.212), as well as a stronger relationship between peer pressure and hazard perception (p = 0.000; r = -0.336). Adolescents are expected to be wiser in filtering information on social media and brave in making independent decisions to avoid being easily influenced by peer invitations. In nursing, education can be provided to adolescents through refusal skills training and digital media literacy programs to strengthen their self-defense against the normalization of e-cigarettes.
