Abstract
Adolescent development is characterized by an increasing need for social acceptance, particularly amid the growing intensity of social media use. This condition encourages self-disclosure and social comparison, which may influence the self-esteem of adolescent social media users, thus necessitating an empirical examination of the relationships among these variables. This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-disclosure and social comparison with self-esteem among adolescent social media users at SMAN 47 Jakarta. This study employed a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach and Spearman correlation analysis. Stratified random sampling was used to select 274 adolescents aged 14–19 years as respondents. The research instruments included the Self-Disclosure Scale, the Iowa–Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure (INCOM), and the State Self-Esteem Scale (SSES), all of which have been proven to be valid and reliable. The results showed significant relationships between self-disclosure and self-esteem, as well as between social comparison and self-esteem among adolescent social media users (p < 0.05). Self-disclosure was positively associated with self-esteem, whereas social comparison was negatively associated with self-esteem. These findings highlight the importance of healthy self-disclosure and adaptive management of social comparison, suggesting the need for educational and supportive interventions by nurses and educational institutions to promote adolescents’ psychological well-being.
