Abstract
Enteral nutrition administration is an essential component in meeting the energy and metabolic requirements of patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). One of the major challenges in this practice is the increase in gastric residual volume, which can impair gastrointestinal tolerance and elevate the risk of aspiration and pneumonia. The intermittent feeding method is an enteral nutrition technique administered at specific time intervals with rest periods in between, allowing for more optimal gastric emptying. This scientific paper aims to analyze the effect of the intermittent feeding method on reducing gastric residual volume in ICU patients. The study employed a case study design. The intervention was conducted over three consecutive days by administering enteral nutrition through the intermittent feeding method, delivered slowly via a syringe pump during each feeding session. The results demonstrated a reduction in gastric residual volume in both patients after three days of intervention. These findings suggest that the intermittent feeding method, when administered slowly, is effective in enhancing gastrointestinal tolerance without causing significant adverse effects. Therefore, this method can be considered a safe and effective strategy for enteral nutrition administration to prevent gastrointestinal complications in critically ill patients in the ICU.
