Abstract
Symbolic violence, as conceptualized by Pierre Bourdieu, is a type of violence that is subtly present in everyday life. This study discusses how the audience interprets the symbolic violence conveyed by Soimah in the podcast “Hasil Didikan Ibu Soimah”. The podcast elicited various responses in the public sphere. This study aims to understand the audience's interpretation and the factors that influence differences in interpretation of the message. The approach used is descriptive qualitative with Stuart Hall’s reception analysis method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six informants with different ages, cultures, life experiences, and generations. The results show that the audience actively decodes the message and does not interpret it uniformly. Interpretation is influenced by the level of awareness of symbolic violence, normalization in the social environment, as well as culture and parenting patterns in the family. In the results, one informant was in a dominant-hegemonic position, where the informant accepted the statement as a form of assertiveness and mental test that was considered reasonable. The majority of informants, numbering 4, were in a negotiated position, where they acknowledged the positive intent but still criticized the impact it had. One informant was in an oppositional position, where they completely rejected the normalization of symbolic violence in a relationship.
