Abstract

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini mengkaji elemen honesty dan trust dalam proses komunikasi pengungkapan diri (self disclosure) (Jourard, 1959; Altman & Taylor, 1973) pada hubungan pacaran jarak jauh. Penelitian ini berbicara tentang honesty dan trust pada pasangan yang menjalani hubungan jarak jauh. Honesty dan trust adalah elemen penting dalam sebuah hubungan. Penelitian-penelitian terdahulu menyatakan bahwa pengungkapan diri dapat membantu untuk mencapai hubungan yang mendalam dan dapat meningkatkan kepuasaan (Meeks, Hendrick, & Hendrick, 1998; Schmidt & Cornelius, 1987; Sprecher, 1987 dalam Devito, 2022), serta meningkatkan rasa saling suka dalam hubungan (Collins & Miller, 1994 dalam DeVito 2022). Di era digital seperti saat ini, bentuk hubungan bisa macam-macam, hubungan jarak jauh maupun tidak. Tapi hubungan jarak jauh, sekarang ini sudah dimudahkan dengan fasilitas media sosial, platform online yang bisa mendekatkan jarak. Namun, isu honesty & trust tetap ada dalam hubungan tersebut. Beberapa berpendapat bahwa hubungan jarak jauh yang mana dilakukan dengan media online akan tetap mengandalkan honesty, trust, serta komitmen sama halnya dengan hubungan yang dilakukan secara tatap muka (Whitty & Gavin, 2001) dalam (Devito, 2022). Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini ingin melihat bagaimana proses self disclosure yang di dalamnya melibatkan honesty dan trust pada hubungan jarak jauh. Sehingga penelitian ini melihat bagaimana individu tetap dapat mengungkapkan kejujuran dan kepercayaan sehingga mampu mempertahankan hubungan. Penelitian ini menggunakan studi fenomenologi untuk mengeksplorasi pengalaman subjektif individu dalam mengungkapkan diri mereka dalam hubungan jarak jauh, terutama terkait dengan bagaimana mereka memaknai kejujuran dan kepercayaan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam hubungan jarak jauh pengungkapan diri tetap berlangsung dengan keterlibatan honesty dan trust dengan motif-motif pengungkapan diri serta selective self disclosure. Kata kunci: Self disclosure, Honesty, Trust, Hubungan Jarak Jauh   ABSTRACT This study examines the role of honesty and trust in the process of self disclosure (Jourard, 1959; Altman & Taylor, 1973) within long-distance dating relationships. Honesty and trust are fundamental elements in maintaining romantic relationships, particularly when partners are physically separated. Previous research indicates that self disclosure contributes to deeper relational development and higher relationship satisfaction (Meeks, Hendrick, & Hendrick, 1998; Schmidt & Cornelius, 1987; Sprecher, 1987, in DeVito, 2022), as well as increased mutual liking between partners (Collins & Miller, 1994, in DeVito, 2022).In the digital era, long-distance relationships are increasingly supported by social media and online communication platforms that help reduce physical distance. Despite these technological affordances, issues of honesty and trust remain central. Scholars argue that long-distance relationships mediated through online communication still depend on honesty, trust, and commitment in ways similar to face-to-face relationships (Whitty & Gavin, 2001, in DeVito, 2022). Accordingly, this study explores how self disclosure involving honesty and trust is practiced in long-distance relationships and how these elements help individuals sustain their relationships. Using a phenomenological approach, this study investigates individuals’ subjective experiences of self disclosure, focusing on how honesty and trust are understood and negotiated. The findings reveal that self disclosure in long-distance relationships continues to occur through the involvement of honesty and trust, shaped by disclosure motives and practices of selective self disclosure.
