Abstract

This study was motivated by the increasing pressure experienced by Generation Z due to the high intensity of content exposure on TikTok social media. The use of TikTok without adequate self-control has the potential to cause serious problems for mental health and hinder productivity. This study aims to describe TikTok usage behavior and its impact on the mental health of Generation Z. The method used is descriptive qualitative. Data were obtained through direct interviews with five Generation Z informants who actively use TikTok and have mental health issues. The results show that TikTok is used during leisure time or according to the emotional state of the informants. The informants are also quite selective in choosing content, preferring entertainment, positive, and educational content, and using the “not interested” feature to filter out unwanted content. The mental health issues they experience generally arose before the pandemic and are not directly related to TikTok use. Instead, TikTok is used as a medium for entertainment, a source of positive information, and a means of building social communication. Overall, the informants have implemented the Digital Wellbeing Framework by managing their use of digital technology in a balanced manner to maintain their personal wellbeing.
