Abstract

The Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR) is a key indicator that reflects the involvement of the working age-population (15 years and above) in economic activities, including those who are employed, actively seeking employment, or preparing a business. Despite its abundant natural resources and strong industrial base, Sumatra Island exhibits a relatively low and fluctuating LFPR compared to other major islands in Indonesia, showing inconsistencies with the upward trends in GDRP growth, provincial minimum wage, and average years of schooling. This study incorporates a dummy variable for the Covid-19 pandemic. The purpose of this research is to analyze the influence of economic growth, provincial minimum wage, average years of schooling, and the Covid-19 pandemic on TPAK across the 10 provinces of Sumatra Island. This study using panel data regression with the Random Effect Model (REM) selected as the best model, covering the period 2008-2024. The results reveal that: (1) Economic growth has a positive significant effect on TPAK; (2) Provincial minimum wage has a positive significant effect on TPAK; (3) Average years of schooling has a negative significant effect on TPAK; (4) The Covid-19 pandemic has a positive significant effect on TPAK. These findings underscore the importance of coordinated and aligned policies to optimize the labor force potential in Sumatra and support sustainable post-pandemic economic recovery.
