Abstract

This research aims to analyze the effect of varying welding current on the tensile strength of Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) butt joint connections using SS400 steel. Welding currents of 75 A, 90 A, and 116 A were applied using ER70S 6 electrode wire. Tensile testing was conducted based on ASTM E8M to obtain the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield strength (YS), and elongation values. Additionally, microstructure observations were carried out descriptively to visually identify the weld metal (WM), heat-affected zone (HAZ), and base metal (BM) as supporting data to describe the overall condition of the welded joints. The tensile test results indicated that the UTS values ranged from 429–450 MPa and the YS values ranged from 294–312 MPa, all of which meet the mechanical requirements of SS400 steel. The experimental trend shows that increasing the welding current tends to decrease the average UTS, with the highest UTS obtained at 75 A (440.78 MPa). All specimens fractured in the base metal region, indicating that the weld area had sufficient bonding strength. Based on these results, it can be concluded that 75 A is the most optimal welding current in this study, as it provides the best overall tensile performance of the welded joints.
