Abstract

Introduction Social media use in Indonesia has reached 79.5% of the total population, with an average usage duration of 18 hours and 41 minutes per week. The high intensity of social media use may influence students’ behavior, particularly self-control and academic procrastination, which can affect the academic process and performance. Methods This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach and was conducted in November 2025. A total of 75 students from the Medical, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta, were selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected using the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS), Procrastination Assessment Scale for Students (PASS), and the Social Media Usage Intensity Scale (SIPMS). Data analysis was performed using the likelihood ratio test. Results The results showed that most respondents had moderate levels of self-control (76%), academic procrastination (65.33%), and social media usage intensity (90.67%). Bivariate analysis demonstrated a significant association between self-control and social media usage intensity (p=0.045). However, no significant association was found between academic procrastination and social media usage intensity (p=0.292). Conclusion Self-control is significantly associated with social media usage intensity, whereas academic procrastination is not associated with social media usage intensity among students of the Medical and Medical Profession Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta.
