Abstract
Blood pressure variability is a physiological phenomenon in which blood pressure decreases by 10–20% at night; however, a decrease or increase in blood pressure variability can elevate the risk of hypertension or other cardiovascular diseases. University students are considered young adults, and hypertension generally develops between the ages of 18 and 39 years. Various lifestyle factors are known to be risk factors for hypertension and contribute to the increasing prevalence of hypertension in young adulthood. This study was conducted to analyze the relationship between gadget use under low-light conditions, sleep quality, smoking habits, and the waist-to-hip ratio with blood pressure variability among students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta, Undergraduate Medical and Pharmacy Study Programs, Class of 2024.This study was carried out at the Faculty of Medicine, UPN “Veteran” Jakarta, from March to December 2025. A cross-sectional study design was used. Simple random sampling was applied for sample selection. The two-proportion hypothesis test formula was used to determine a sample size of 46 participants. Data were collected through measurements of the waist-to-hip ratio and morning and evening blood pressure, as well as questionnaire completion. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the Chi-square test. Gadget use under low-light conditions, sleep quality, waist-to-hip ratio, and smoking habits in relation to blood pressure variability yielded p-values > 0.05. This study found no association between gadget use under low-light conditions, sleep quality, smoking habits, and waist-to-hip ratio with blood pressure variability among students of the Faculty of Medicine, UPN “Veteran” Jakarta.
