Abstract

Background: Obesity is a metabolic disorder characterized by excessive body fat accumulation and is closely associated with increased oxidative stress, as indicated by elevated levels of malondialdehyde (MDA). Moringa oleifera fruits contain antioxidant compounds that play a role in neutralizing free radicals. The Objective: To determine the effect of Moringa oleifera fruit extract on MDA levels in obese rat. The Methode: This was an experimental study with a post-test only control group design. Thirty male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into five groups: normal control group (K1), obese negative control group (K2), treatment group 1 (K3) receiving Moringa oleifera fruit extract at a dose of 500 mg/kg body weight once daily, treatment group 2 (K4) receiving Moringa oleifera fruit extract at a dose of 500 mg/kg body weight twice daily, and a positive control group receiving vitamin C (K5). The treatments were administered for 14 days. After the treatment period, the rats were euthanized, and cardiac tissue MDA levels were measured using the Will’s method. The Result: Administration of Moringa oleifera fruit extract at a dose of 500 mg/kgBW, both once daily and twice daily (K3 and K4) significantly reduced MDA levels compared to the obese control group (K2) (p<0.01). The Conclusion: Moringa oleifera fruit extract reduces MDA levels in obese rat models and has potential as an exigenous antioxidant source.
