Abstract
Arterial elasticity plays an important role in maintaining cardiovascular function, even in young individuals. Handgrip strength (HGS) is commonly used as a practical indicator of overall muscle strength and metabolic status. Studies in older populations have shown that lower HGS is associated with increased arterial stiffness, yet it remains unclear whether a similar pattern is present in healthy young adults. This study aimed to explore the relationship between HGS and both central and peripheral arterial elasticity in young adult men. A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 53 male medical students aged 17–23 years from the Faculty of Medicine, UPN “Veteran” Jakarta. Dominant-hand HGS was assessed using a CAMRY EH-101 dynamometer, while central arterial elasticity (AE) and peripheral elasticity (PE) were assessed using an Accelerated Photoplethysmograph (APG) Analyzer (SA-3000P). HGS was found to be predominantly normal (69.8%) with mean value of 41.06 ± 6.50 kg. Most participants showed suboptimal AE (69.8%) and normal PE (64.2%). Spearman correlation analysis showed no significant correlation between HGS and AE (rs = 0.093; p = 0.507) nor between HGS and PE (rs = 0.168; p = 0.228). These results suggest that, among healthy young adults with relatively similar physiological characteristics, muscle strength does not appear to reflect arterial elasticity. Larger studies with broader age ranges and additional vascular biomarkers may provide clearer insights into this relationship.
