Abstract

Burnout among medical students is a global concern that can adversely affect cognitive function, emotional well-being, professional attitudes, and increase the risk of academic attrition. Burnout is influenced by various internal and external factors. One internal factor related to the learning process is self-directed learning readiness (SDLR), which reflects students’ ability to manage and direct their own learning independently. Inconsistencies in previous research findings regarding the relationship between SDLR and burnout, along with the high academic demands in medical education, underlie the importance of this study. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between SDLR and burnout among medical students. This study employed an observational analytic descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample was selected using stratified random sampling involving 106 undergraduate medical students from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta, cohorts 2022–2025. Data were collected using the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Student Survey (MBI-SS). Data analysis was performed using the Spearman correlation test. The results showed no significant relationship between SDLR and burnout (p = 0.983), with a very weak negative correlation. These findings indicate that SDLR is not a primary factor influencing burnout among medical students, suggesting that other factors such as individual characteristics, academic workload, and social support may play a more substantial role in the occurrence of burnout.
