Abstract

Ischemic stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and mortality in Indonesia, with various risk factors that may influence its severity. This study aims to explore the relationship between BMI and the severity of ischemic stroke assessed using the NIHSS score at Fatmawati General Hospital in 2024. An analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach was applied, involving 108 ischemic stroke patients who met the inclusion criteria. Data were obtained from patient medical records, including BMI values and NIHSS scores. Since the data were not normally distributed, the relationship between variables was analyzed using Spearman’s rank correlation test. The findings showed that the majority of patients were male (61.11%) and predominantly within the age range of 55–65 years. The highest BMI category was obesity (42.6%), while most stroke severity cases fell into the moderate stroke category (68.52%). The bivariate analysis indicated that BMI did not show a significant association with ischemic stroke severity (p = 0.104). Therefore, it can be concluded that BMI has no significant relationship with the degree of ischemic stroke severity, and other factors such as age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia are likely to play a more dominant role in influencing stroke severity.
