Abstract
Trichophyton rubrum is one of the most common dermatophyte species that causes dermatophytosis. The prolonged use of conventional antifungal medications may lead to resistance and adverse effects, therefore alternative treatments using herbal plants are needed, one of which is beluntas (Pluchea indica) leaf. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of beluntas leaf extract in inhibiting the growth of T. rubrum. The study was conducted experimentally using a post-test only control group design with five concentrations of beluntas leaf extract: 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%. Ketoconazole solution served as the positive control, while sterile aquadest was used as the negative control. The antifungal effectiveness test was performed using the well-diffusion method for two days, with observations taken at 24 hours and 48 hours. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test followed by the Mann–Whitney post-hoc test. The results showed that beluntas leaf extract exhibited a significant antifungal effect against Trichophyton rubrum (p<0.05). Statistical analysis indicated significant differences in effectiveness among all treatment groups, except between the 40% and 50% extract concentrations. Beluntas leaf extract contains active compounds include alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, triterpenoids, and phenolics. Extract concentrations of 10%, 20%, and 30% exhibited weak antifungal activity at both 24-hour and 48-hour observations, while concentrations of 40% and 50% demonstrated moderate antifungal activity. The most effective concentration was 40%, producing an average inhibition zone diameter of 7,25 mm at 24 hours, which decreased to 6,35 mm at 48 hours.
