Abstract
Film is a powerful form of mass media that plays a significant role in representing aspects of popular culture, including fashion and lifestyle. In this context, the film Cruella (2021) is notable for portraying the character of Estella/Cruella through the symbolic use of fashion and a hedonistic lifestyle. This study addresses the problem of how fashion functions as a narrative tool in character development, and how hedonism is represented and critiqued through the film’s visual and narrative elements. The objective of this research is to analyze the representation of fashion and hedonistic lifestyle in Cruella, and to explore the meanings conveyed through visual signs using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory. This study employs a qualitative approach with Barthes’ semiotic analysis method, focusing on denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings embedded in costumes, character behavior, and visual contexts within the film. The findings reveal that fashion is portrayed not merely as a marker of identity, but also as a symbol of rebellion, ambition, and the protagonist’s journey of self-discovery. Meanwhile, the hedonistic lifestyle is illustrated through the pursuit of power, recognition, and dominance within a glamorous yet competitive fashion industry. The film also presents a critical view of the materialistic and superficial values often emphasized in the modern fashion world. In conclusion, Cruella represents fashion as a form of self-expression and resistance, while simultaneously critiquing the ideology of hedonism prevalent in contemporary popular culture. As such, the film serves not only as entertainment but also as a reflective medium that challenges societal values and ideologies.
