Abstract

The 2024 Presidential Election became a decisive political moment for the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), which had previously succeeded in bringing Joko Widodo to the presidency for two consecutive terms. However, in the 2024 election, the Ganjar Pranowo–Mahfud MD ticket endorsed by PDI-P suffered a significant defeat against the Prabowo Subianto–Gibran Rakabuming Raka pair. This research aims to analyze the causes of that defeat, with a particular focus on the internal and external dynamics of the party that shaped the solidity of electoral support. This study applies Françoise Boucek’s theory of factionalism, which views political parties as entities characterized by internal fragmentation of power and competing interests. The research employs a qualitative approach using a case study strategy. Data were collected through document analysis, interviews, media observation, and the review of scholarly literature and political reporting. The study focuses on the internal dynamics between the Megawati and Jokowi factions, as well as the influence of external factions, including volunteer groups and state actors. The findings reveal that the failure of Ganjar’s candidacy was not merely the result of weak campaign strategies or low candidate electability, but rather stemmed from the fractured structure of internal party support and the inability to strategically manage external factions. The lack of explicit support from President Jokowi, fragmentation among regional elites, weak campaign communication, and the use of social assistance programs by state power factions that ultimately strengthened political rivals all reflect a case of degenerative factionalism within PDI-P. This research concludes that Boucek’s theory is highly relevant in explaining how uncontrolled factionalism can weaken party cohesion and result in electoral failure. To prevent similar outcomes in the future, PDI-P and other political parties need internal reforms in faction management, decentralization of candidacy processes, and consolidated cross-structural communication strategies. Accordingly, this study contributes to the broader development of research on political parties and electoral democracy in Indonesia.
